IceMen Insights Podcast #407:
Interview with John Peterson

Next Episode Airs Wed. Dec. 2
(Podcast Online Thu. Dec. 3)

It’s another special edition of “IceMen Insights,” a start-to-finish interview with new IceMen Broadcaster John Peterson!

Derick and I begin by prodding John about life before Evansville – where he grew up, being the oldest of 5 siblings, playing hockey as a kid, calling his first hockey game in Arizona of all places, broadcasting high school games near the Canadian border, working for the Minnesota Wild, and whether or not he had ever even heard of Evansville before taking the IceMen job.

We then delve into his new life in Evansville – how he got the job, his love of the Ford Center, broadcasting with a color commentator, excellent intermission interviews, hosting IceMen Live and working with Brian Vaal, being the new guy in town, his thoughts about the IceMen fans, “Miracle on Ice” Olympian Dave Christian’s upcoming appearance, and his excitement about the team’s Thanksgiving trip to Alaska.

Plus: Dumped on the 4th of July, Petey and Beaner, adjusting accents, discovering the Fall Festival, getting kicked out of Beef O’Brady’s, getting destroyed in ping-pong, difficult pronunciations, avoiding dead air, really really long games, and revisiting Derick’s infamous TV special!

IceMen Insights Podcast #405:
Interview with Bridget McDonald

Next Episode Airs Wed. Oct. 21
(Podcast Online Thu. Oct. 22)

The 2015-16 IceMen regular season begins THIS WEEKEND! In the spirit of getting the season started off on a fun note, this week’s special edition of “IceMen Insights” features a start-to-finish interview with IceMen Director of Marketing and Game Day Operations Bridget McDonald!

Derick and I begin our interrogation discussion by asking Bridget to explain her role and what a typical game day entails for her. We also talk about the physical demands IceMen staffers face during home games, as well as the biggest challenge of Bridget’s job. Plus, all 3 of us offer up our predictions for the 2015-16 home opener attendance.

We also get Bridget’s “insider” take on a bunch of IceMen promotions, including the home opener, “Back to the Future” Night, Education Day, Prostate Cancer Awareness Night featuring “Miracle on Ice” Olympian Dave Christian, Mascot Night in celebration of Blizzard’s birthday (with Blizzard bobbleheads), the Teddy Bear Toss for 911 Gives Hope, New Year’s Eve with post-game fireworks, “Star Wars” Night, Disney/Marvel Night, Pink the Rink Weekend with pink ice, Baby Races, St. Patrick’s Day with green ice, Autism Awareness Night, and the home finale featuring the ZOOperstars.

Plus: Stephen Rickard in heels, Derick is easy, Ron Geary is a 5-year old, courting the Hanson brothers, Save The Wieners, and something gives Derick “the feels” in his nether regions!

IceMen Insights Podcast #404:
Going Long – REAL Long!

Next Episode Airs Wed. Oct. 14
(Podcast Online Thu. Oct. 15)

Is It October Yet? Well yes, as a matter of fact, it is! And this week’s “IceMen Insights” is super-sized in order to get you ready for the start of the season! Among the analysis and nonsense in this extended episode…

Derick and I discuss which players have been sent down to Evansville by Binghamton and Ottawa (and why a goaltender is not among them), all of the players the IceMen have signed to ECHL contracts, the ECHL’s opening-day roster deadline, and this weekend’s Guns & Hoses hockey game at Swonder.

For the first time this season, “IceMen Insights” goes into OVERTIME, our podcast-exclusive bonus segment that does not air on WYIR. This edition of OT (which begins at the 29:23 mark in the MP3) gets started with a Derick rant on 3-on-3 OT and a look at the new IceMen radio broadcasting arrangement, which does not actually include over-the-air radio. We then transition to the conclusion of our series of NHL off-season recaps, beginning with some updates on teams we’ve previously covered in Season 4 – including news about a player with Evansville ties making an NHL roster at the age of 19.

We finally delve into the 5 teams we ran out of time for during our previous 3 episodes. Derick’s beloved Toronto Maple Leafs threw a ton of money at Mike Babcock, traded Phil Kessel, and brought in a bunch of cheap veterans. The Penguins acquired the aforementioned Kessel, the Sharks spit out their longtime coach and goaltender, the Kings made a big trade with Boston and dealt with a pair of headline-grabbing off-ice controversies, and the Ducks made a lot of moves in an effort to finally get over the hump in the playoffs.

We also take an in-depth look at the Central Division, which features some of the Evansville area’s favorite NHL teams. The Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks now look a lot different thanks to salary cap woes, Dallas is starting to look a bit like Chicago South, the Wild didn’t go wild with off-season changes, the Jets largely stayed the course as well, Colorado made some questionable moves, the Predators re-signed a zillion forwards and brought in a couple of nice depth additions, and the Blues are, um, well, we’re not quite sure what exactly they’re doing over in St. Louis.

Plus: Derick tests Shocker’s foul-language censorship skills during OT, Fall Festival stories, rockin’ out with Motley Crue, the sad story of a non-displaced broken penis, the adventures of Bobcat Pabthway, the return of the Jagr mullet, Irish pricks, visiting Arkansas, Derick’s filthy stache, moist sphincters, and Shocker gets his Fic on!

IceMen Insights Podcast #403:
B-B-B-Bingo and the Bolts

Next Episode Airs Wed. Oct. 7
(Podcast Online Thu. Oct. 8)

The 4th season of “IceMen Insights” continues! Among the analysis and nonsense in this episode…

Derick and I discuss which affiliate-contracted players the IceMen could be receiving from Ottawa and Binghamton to start the season, a few more players who will NOT be a part of the 2015-16 IceMen roster, the Evansville Thunderbolts’ first two games, and the latest details about IceMen training camp.

We also take a look at the off-season for the NHL’s Pacific Division. The Oilers have a new franchise player in #1 overall pick Connor McDavid and they made a bunch of other moves as well, Calgary continues to trend in the right direction, the Canucks are rebuilding on the fly, the Coyotes are um still in the league or something, San Jose bid farewell to Antti Niemi, the Kings are dealing with controversy, and the Ducks look primed for another quack-tastic season. Plus, we catch up on leftovers from our previous two shows, checking in with the top-heavy Penguins and Derick’s beloved Toronto Maple Leafs!

Plus: Pardon our French, Derick heads south, celebrating a musical legend, throwing Bill Nadeau under the bus, Derick calls his wife a ho, fun hockey player names, and Derick mistakenly rechristens the ZOOperstars!

IceMen Insights Podcast #402:
Workin’ for a Livin’ (Somewhere Else)

Next Episode Airs Wed. Sept. 23
(Podcast Online Thu. Sept. 24)

The 4th season of “IceMen Insights” continues! Among the analysis and nonsense in this episode…

Derick and I discuss the players who will NOT be a part of the 2015-16 IceMen roster, the Gwinnett Gladiators attempting to take over Atlanta, the Evansville Thunderbolts’ impending home opener, Guns & Hoses Hockey, and the IceMen Maniacs Booster Club’s annual election.

We also take a look at the off-season for the NHL’s Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets are trending up, the Rangers escaped salary cap hell (for now), the improving Islanders are staying the course, New Jersey’s rebuild is in full effect, Carolina made a bunch of quality moves, the Capitals acquired American Olympic hero TJ Oshie, the Flyers are ready to begin the Dave Hakstol era, and Pittsburgh pulled off the trade of the summer with Toronto. Plus, we tackle the Leafs’ busy off-season after running out of time for them last week!

Plus: Light ‘em mup mup mup, Derick critiques Shocker’s attire, Chuck Goes To Europe, and a long-awaited update on the status of Pab Thwobby!

IceMen Insights Podcast #401:
New Timeslot, Same Shenanigans

Next Episode Airs Wed. Sept. 16
(Podcast Online Thu. Sept. 17)

After a long hot summer, “IceMen Insights” begins its FOURTH season by bringing the shenanigans to a new timeslot! Among the analysis and nonsense in this episode…

Derick and I discuss the 2015-16 IceMen schedule, home game start time changes, hosting Alaska and making the trip there as well, the rebranding of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, ECHL divisional realignment, and the ECHL adopting 3-on-3 OT and scaling back to 3-round shootouts.

We also take a look at the off-season for the NHL’s Atlantic Division. The Bruins look a lot different after making a bunch of trades, Buffalo begins the Jack Eichel era, Detroit says farewell to Mike Babcock, the Panthers are paying a butt-ton of money to players who won’t even play for them, the Lightning will still be good but have salary cap issues, Montreal will continue to ride Carey Price hard, the Senators are hoping their youth will keep trending upward, and Derick’s beloved Toronto Maple Leafs had a rather busy and interesting off-season that we absolutely HAVE to discuss.

Plus: Shocker sort-of drops an F-bomb, rockin’ out with the Stones, Derick cleaning toilets, participating in a conference call on Education Day, and getting ready for football season!

IceMen Insights Season 4:
Coming Soon to a New Timeslot!

The IceMen Insights podcast is moving! Instead of Wednesdays at lunchtime, the show will soon be airing later in the afternoon, helping end your Hump Day with some much-needed hockey talk – and plenty of nonsense, of course!

The show’s 4th season will premiere on Wednesday, September 9, airing at 4 PM CT on WYIR (96.9 FM and WYIR.com). The podcast version of the show will then be posted sometime on Thursday, September 10.

Why the change? Well, since the 2014-15 season ended, both Derick and I have started new jobs – and our new gigs don’t really jive with the show’s old recording/airing/podcasting schedule. We both love doing the show though, so we’re making some adjustments in order to keep it rolling for another season.

So for Season 4, WYIR’s Amusement Park will start at 4 PM CT each Wednesday, with IceMen Insights launching each episode. The Insights podcast will always then be posted here on IceMenManiacs.com on the following day (Thursday), at varying times as schedules allow.

In addition to the changing timeline, the show’s format will change a bit as well. Each episode will be right around 30 minutes in length, and during the season, we’ll spend less time on “scripted” game recaps and transaction info, allowing a greater focus on off-the-cuff “unscripted” conversation and analysis.

We currently plan to produce Insights weekly through the end of September, with each of the month’s 4 episodes featuring a mix of IceMen talk and 2015-16 NHL team previews (breaking down one division each week). Then starting in October as the IceMen season gets underway, we’ll likely scale back to 2-3 episodes per month, as schedules allow.

We also have something really cool in the works for Season 4. If all goes well with coordinating it, we’re hoping to add monthly interviews with members of the IceMen staff. These interviews will actually be a part of the Insights show, so they will be available in podcast form just like the rest of the show. We’ll have more info about this as plans are confirmed.

So there ya have it, Maniacs. IceMen Insights may be moving and evolving a bit, but it’ll still feature the same shenanigans and knuckleheads you love. (You do love us, right?) We hope you’ll stick with us as we adjust and get settled with our somewhat-new format, just as you have for the past 3 seasons and 71 episodes.

As always, thanks for listening. We’ll see ya on the radio!

Booster Club News:
Upcoming Meeting & Election Info, plus
2015-16 Membership Registration

The 8th season of IceMen hockey is right around the corner, so it’s time for the IceMen Maniacs Booster Club to get things rolling again…

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2015-16 BOOSTER CLUB ELECTION & LAUNCH MEETING
Saturday, September 19 (2 PM)
Large Group Room at the Evansville Central Library (MLK & Walnut)

In addition to general planning for the upcoming season, this meeting will feature the election for the club’s 2015-16 Board of Directors. If there are contested races, the election will be conducted via a paper ballot, to ensure fair and anonymous voting. If there are no contested races, the election will be conducted via a verbal vote of confidence.

It will be a season of change for the booster club, as two current board members are not seeking re-election at all and two others are running for a different position – including a change at the top. But more on that in a minute…

First, we should explain a bit about the Board of Directors, and what each member does. The IceMen Maniacs Booster Club Board of Directors consists of 5 members – President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Member-At-Large.

• The President provides leadership, vision and direction, with a focus on “the big picture.” The President ensures that goals are achieved through teamwork and aims to foster active participation by members, delegating tasks accordingly. The President presides over all club meetings and serves as the club’s primary liaison with the team’s front office.

• The Vice President assists the President as needed, but has more of a focus on the day-to-day operations of the club – such as ensuring that volunteers are secured for working the booster club’s merchandise table at IceMen home games.

• The Treasurer acts as the club’s accountant and financial manager, maintaining the club’s funds and preparing a financial report for presentation to the membership at each club meeting. The Treasurer is also responsible for ensuring that members are properly reimbursed for club-approved expenses.

• The Secretary records the minutes of all club meetings, and then works with the webmaster to make said information available to all. The Secretary also works with the President to ensure that all legal paperwork (such as annual non-profit registration with the State of Indiana) is completed as needed.

• The Member-At-Large assists the President as requested, but primarily serves as “the voice of the membership” on the Board of Directors. Members should treat the Member-At-Large as a liaison between the full membership and the rest of the board. The Member-At-Large has full voting rights during Board of Directors meetings.

So, about the 2015-16 election

After 7 seasons at the helm, Dixie Halber has decided that she will not seek re-election as President. She is looking to take on less of a leadership role, but wants to remain actively involved in the club while also helping her successor get settled as President. Thus, Dixie has announced her intention to run for Vice President for 2015-16, with a focus on facilitating the transition to a new President however possible.

Anita Ice has declared her candidacy for President for 2015-16. Anita joined the board as Member-At-Large in 2013-14 and served as Vice President during the 2014-15 season. She is excited about running for President, and declared “bring on the fun!”

Steve Halber is the only incumbent officer who is seeking re-election in the same position. Steve has declared his intention to run for another season as Treasurer, a position he has held since the dawn of the booster club.

Amanda Shockley has decided that she will not seek re-election as Secretary. She will not run for any office, but will remain a booster club member. Amanda has been the club’s Secretary since its inception, and will provide advice and counsel to her successor as necessary.

Rick Lewallen has decided that he will not seek a second season as Member-At-Large. He will not run for any office this year, but is open to rejoining the Board of Directors in future seasons. Rick recently began a new job that will require a fair bit of overtime, so he does not feel comfortable committing to a Board of Directors slot until he has a better handle on the demands of his new gig.

Any eligible club member (see below for eligibility criteria) who wishes to run for one of the board positions must declare his or her candidacy by 1:59 PM (CT) on Saturday, September 5. To declare your candidacy, simply contact Michael Shockley via e-mail (stormfreak44@yahoo.com) or Facebook (www.facebook.com/mcshockley) with your name and the board position you wish to seek. (Any other form of declaration will NOT be considered valid.) This post will be updated below with new candidate names as they are received. After the candidacy declaration deadline passes, the election ballot will be considered final.

UPDATE – NEW CANDIDATES:
Jennifer Brinkman has officially declared her candidacy for the office of Secretary, and Michelle Shuler has officially declared her candidacy for the office of Member-At-Large. Both Jennifer and Michelle will be unable to attend the election due to prior commitments, but they are excited about joining the board (if elected) and passionate about helping the booster club thrive.

So to summarize the final 2015-16 election ballot…
President: Anita Ice (Current Vice President)
Vice President: Dixie Halber (Current President)
Treasurer: Steve Halber (Incumbent)
Secretary: Jennifer Brinkman
Member-At-Large: Michelle Shuler

It’s the beginning of a new era for the booster club, and we couldn’t be more excited about our future. Thank you all for your support of the IceMen Maniacs Booster Club and Evansville IceMen hockey!
